Scott Avett was born on June 19, 1976 in Cheyenne, WY and raised in rural North Carolina. His father worked as a welder and his mother was a reading teacher. Avett grew up in a musical household where education in the arts was encouraged. Scott is well known for being a founding member of the The Avett Brothers, but he is also an accomplished visual artist. Avett attended East Carolina University, where he studied journalistic broadcasting and painting. After receiving a communications degree in 1999, painter Leland Wallin convinced Scott to pursue a career in visual art.
